Tom Ford's Black Orchid & Chanel Rouge Coco in #21 Rivoli

Valentine's Day recommendation #2! This time, I'll be reviewing Tom Ford's Black Orchid EDP and Chanel Rouge Coco lipsstick in #21, Rivoli.

I'll start with the perfume first for this post.

Tom Ford's Black Orchid

To start with, I need to mention that Black Orchid is not a typical, straightforward scent. This is one of those things you need to test well before committing to a full bottle. The reviews out there are very polarized: some people strongly like it, but there is an almost equal number of people who really don't like it. My personal theory on why this might be so is that there might be a bit of confusion about what we are to expect from this perfume. People might approach this with the notion that it will be dark and floral, but might be disappointed when they are hit with the many unusual notes which make up this unique beauty.

Black Orchid. Sounds like it should be... well, dark, for starters, but floral, too. The big surprise here is that there is a complexity that is rarely seen these days, and a boldness in note selection that people don't see coming when you see the name Black Orchid. Tom Ford aims to shock... but the great thing is, he also aims to please.

Tom Ford's Black Orchid opens with a hefty blast of pineapple, melon and coconut. Musk and spices come slowly into play too, adding texture and a masculine nuance. All in all, a grand entrance.

As it continues to develop, the smell of fresh sheets wafts into the mix. I love what that adds to the scent. It lifts the fruity notes and freshens the sweetness until it conjures memories of warm, fresh summer mornings. The overall scent is still very robust, but the added freshness ensures that it will not become cloying, sickly-sweet or overwhelmingly spicy/musky.

The sweet fruitiness is eventually simplified, the spices turn to incense, and the base leaves us mainly with chocolate. What a beautiful way to bring such a unique composition to a head.

Tom Ford Black Orchid 2This only comes in Eau De Parfum and Parfum, though there is a flanker (a sister fragrance under a similar but slightly different name) called Black Orchid Voile De Fleur with the same black bottle but it has a black label instead of a gold one. The Parfum exists, but it's not as easy to find as most, and almost no one can get their hands on it. My review here has been for the Eau De Parfum, and trust me, it's plenty strong. It'll last eight hours and beyond.

Next up for reviewing,

Chanel's Rouge Coco in shade #21, Rivoli.

The Rouge Coco lipsticks are opaque, lightweight, and creamy.
Rivoli is one of my favourite shades of lipstick ever. It's a deep red, but it isn't dark enough to ever look Gothic. It's also not just a plain red. Rivoli is more of a cherry red - crimson with a breath of pink. It's still definitely red, and it's a very classic shade of it, but wow, does that hint of pink make it easy to pull off. Chanel Rouge Coco 21 RivoliOnce again, here is a lip blot, and the brushed-on swatch to the right of it. You can really see here what I mean by cherry red. Beautiful! (You can click to enlarge)

Like Rouge Coco Shine, the Rouge Coco lipsticks, too, have that light rosy scent. Another feature they share is the excellent click when you close it, which a lot of reviewers will mention, and with good reason. The cap slides firmly back on, with only the merest resistance, making the packaging feel solid and not at all cheap, and then there is the firm but not snappy-sounding click. Subtle details, but they are good details when you're getting into the high-end products. Chanel Rouge Coco Rivoli 21

One thing this one has that Rouge Coco Shine does not, however, is the embossed CHANEL that is stamped into the lipstick itself. They couldn't do that with Rouge Coco Shine because it's one of those lipsticks where it is protected all around by its metal casing, and only the tip touches your lips.

I love the packaging of this lipstick too. It's thicker than Rouge Coco Shine's, but it has that same satin-smooth finish. It's glossy and very solid. The Chanel logo is on the top of the lipstick, just like Rouge Coco Shine, imprinted into the case, rather than just painted on the surface. It's a nice touch.

Have a great day, and thanks for reading!
A.
